2004 North American International Auto Show

The era of Smokey and the Bandit movies

Those of us fortunate enough to be around in the 70s when this amazing auto came out drool everytime we consider it.  Imagine getting a vehicle from the factory with a 455 cubic inch engine in it!This automobile kicked butt!  Then if you did some work, like we did to ours, as in having the engine blue released, balanced and a load more, it did even better.  Let’s just say it was doing much better then one hp per cubic inch!

This was the era of Smokey and the Bandit movies.  Good ole boy Burt Reynolds drove a black Trans Am in the film and everybody and his uncle all of a sudden wanted one.  Of course, by that time the ones they were selling were watered down versions with no where near the power of the first ones. 

Since we are not sure of the statute of limitations, let’s just say that any stories are thought to start’Once on A Time’. 

One of our favorite stories is when we were getting onto sunrise road late one evening and a Camaro rolled up next to us and started revving his engine, well you can imagine the rest.Here was a poor soul who had not a clue of what was in store.  Since we do not believe in street racing, it definitely was a good thing we were both going onto the entrance ramp.  After we were satisfied that no one was on the parkway at that point of night, we let the Beast Out To Play.  We never did see any more then his fading headlights.

One of the funniest moments was when we lived in upstate NY and my man went to the store to choose something up and this man in a Mustang 2 pulled up next to him and my husband had some fun ( hey, we are all entitled infrequently ).  As Chuck tells it : You see at that point a local car dealer was running a television spot featuring a Mustang 2 just destroying a Trans Am.  So this gentleman pulls up next to me, gunning his engine for all he’s’s worth.  The light changes, he chirps his tires and flashes me an enormous smile as he takes off.  Well, I idle away from the light,give it just enough gas in first to drag even with him, then drop the hammer, lighting up both tires, throw second, light them up again and then ease off.  Drive down the line to the store.

When I come out of the store this guy has finally got there and is waiting for me and says,’but the commercial asserts Mustangs will beat the pants off the Trans Am.’ I very blithely answered,’Not this Trans Am!’

They don’t make them like this anymore.  It’s sad when you concentrate on it!  Those of us who lived and grew up in the age of the muscle cars, street rods, saturday night cruise nights were very,very fortunate.  I feel sorry for the youth of today that they missed out on all of this. 

So what happened to that great 455 Trans Am, sadly the cruel upstate NY winters are not kind to autos and rust took the Trans Am from us.  However, we probably did replace it - with a customised 1973 Vette, which we drove cross country to California, but that could be a full nother story!

One of the hottest muscle cars

What is the most well-liked muscle car ever that goes 0 to sixty in 6.5 seconds flat? 

The answer is, the 1966 Pontiac GTO which is a choice muscle car.  In fact, when it was released, it quickly became the top selling muscle vehicle in history.  With the ‘66 GTO, Pontiac truly created a new masterwork which has remained in high demand among muscle auto enthusiasts for nearly 4 decades.

Most Significant Vehicle Of The Year

The Pontiac Solstice has bagged an award just latterly.  It was named the most important vehicle of the Year for 2006.  This award was given by Edmunds.com.  Edmunds.com is one of the premier online resources for info about cars and automobiles and other things related to the automobile industry.  This award is also part of the 5th yearly Edmunds.com Consumers’ Most Wanted auto awards. 

Last Nov, the Pontiac Solstice already received the same award.  Now this time, when the buyers judged autos, it again bagged that same title.  This exemplary vehicle has gained and took nearly half of the consumers’ votes.  It was followed by the Honda Civic, and the Chevrolet Corvette. 

According to Karl Brauer, the editor in chief of Edmunds.com,’It’s always engaging to tap into the minds of consumers.  These annual awards provide understanding of consumers’ collective impressions while the Edmunds.com Forums and our social networking web site CarSpace give glimpses into individual views every day of the year.’ Brauer also added,’The domestic automakers made some real traction this year among the shoppers who voted.  Domestic cars won twice as many awards as they actually did last year - a good sign for Chrysler, Ford, and GM.’

The Pontiac Solstice is a creation of General Motors and has been in production starting this year.  It is a sports automobile and holds just one body style - a roadster that holds two doors.  It has been built using the FR Kappa platform and its power comes out of a 2.4 liter Ecotec I4 engine.  Its rivals include the Nissan 350Z, the Honda S2000, the Mazda MX-5, and the Chrysler Crossfire.  This vehicle has been designed by Wayne Cherry.

Cash for Clunkers – Crash Course or Successful Campaign?

Everyone who lives in the continental United States heard of the Cash for Clunkers program and what the government hoped it would do for the struggling economy. The up-to $4500 trade-in value for a “clunker” was definitely enough to get a lot of people’s attention. There were some stipulations on what you could buy after trading in your clunker – the car had to be a new, more fuel efficient vehicle. The program was such a hit in the beginning that the government ran out of funds and had to extend the deadline.

 

All in all, this program was a great way for a lot of people to get rid of old, environmentally damaging vehicles and get in to a new, reliable car. In order to qualify for a trade in, the vehicle could not be more than 25 years old, must be drivable and insured for at least a year and get 18mpg or less. It’s good news that Ford nabbed the other two spots in the top ten, but it makes you wonder if this program achieved what the government hoped it would.

The main goal of the Cash for Clunkers program was to boost auto sales and feed money back into the American economy. With a majority of the new cars purchased hailing from Asian markets, how much good did this program do? The program did, after all, get over 600,000 non-fuel-efficient vehicles off the road - which is a good thing. The program also however, put a lot more foreign cars on the roads rather than American. Still, it was an economy booster for the car industry and car dealerships across the country with auto sales rising 10.6% according to government statistics.

While many of the new cars purchased under the Cash for Clunkers program were foreign, this did still help the American industry. Many of the foreign companies like Honda have stated they will be increasing production of their cars in the United States. Even if they are not American cars, an increase in automotive production creates reveneue for American factories of foreign brands, thus opening up jobs here in the states. When it comes down to it, the Cash for Clunkers program seems to have been a huge success drawing a lot of customers to once empty car lots. There was a lot of revenue created for dealers, even outside of the government program and increased sales in a struggling industry, even if only for a short time.
